About Susan
A co-founder of Healing HealthCare Systems, Susan E. Mazer earned her Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Development from Fielding Graduate University, where she also holds a Master of Arts degree. She was previously awarded a graduate fellowship to Stanford University where she completed her Master of Arts in Musicology.
Prior to her work in healthcare, she had a full-time career as a jazz harpist, performing with Dallas Smith, and such notables as Ahmad Jamal, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, and Julio Iglesias. She continues to perform and, in 2024, was featured in jazz events in Mumbai, India.
Susan’s accomplishments in healthcare include bringing the issue of hospital noise to the forefront of hospital concern through accredited educational programs for nurses and presentations at conferences. This year, she was the Keynote speaker at the 12th Annual Conference on Medication Safety in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where she spoke on the use of music to design healing environments, pain and the patient environment, and did a two-hour workshop on The Patient Experience as an Ecosystem.
She is considered an expert in the field of privacy and HIPAA. She is a well-published author, having written articles and whitepapers for major healthcare journals and periodicals focusing on noise in hospitals, speech privacy, patient safety, and other related topics.
Susan has been featured on “Good Morning America” as a hospital noise expert. She is a member of the American Gerontological Society, Global Society for Arts in Health, Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), Beryl Institute Speakers Bureau and Resource Advisory Council.
She was the 2023 recipient of the Caring Science Visionary Leadership Award from the Watson Caring Science Institute. As of this month, she is the newest member of the Board of Directors of the Watson Caring Science Institute.
